Worried that your kids may get into trouble online?

Parents who want to learn more about social media safety and cyber bullying get a great chance on Wednesday, Sept. 19 as the Cowichan Secondary School parents group presents Darren Laur. This Victoria-area cop with 26 years experience in law enforcement is a gripping speaker who knows the social media world inside and out.

The event is free and runs from 6: 30 p.m. to 8: 30 p.m. in the school gym.

Any parents are welcome. Laur is an internationally recognized safety expert, an awardwinning author and highly sought after speaker who specializes in the area of personal safety both online and off-line.

Deeply immersed in social media both on and off the job, he has taught digital safety for the past 12 years and has written more than 100 articles on Internet and social media safety and security.

Education is key and this presentation is aimed at helping even the most computer illiterate parent.

Cellphone/smartphone and web cam safety, understanding that Internet postings are permanent and searchable, how digital peer aggression gets started and when to be concerned as a parent are only a few of the timely topics in this useful presentation.

Laur is also renowned for the tough talks he gives teenage students in which many of his listeners discover, for perhaps the first time, that almost none of their Internet activity is actually hidden and that youthful postings can later derail university entrance, job and financial prospects, travel and lots more.
