Hi Darren:

I really liked your presentation! It was LIT!!  It was organized, well made, appealing to us, comedic, powerful, meaningful, and very clear cut! Now i know the proper do’s and donts  to secure my job and social safety etc. Truly legendary! Your story really touched many hearts that day.

Hi Darren and Beth:

I cannot thank you enough for coming to present at our school today (Parkland) especially with such short notice. I hoped to come shake your hand and thank you personally but there were so many students wanting to I had to get back to class. You're presentation really struck a chord with so many in that gym today and, even within 10 minutes after returning to class, the conversations between the students were amazing. Thank you for the work you do and the passion you have. So important in today's world. So thankful we got to witness your presentation today. PS....as a mom I was thoroughly engaged as well and learned so much about the huge world my kids wade through every day.

Hi Darren:

Invaluable information - every school in every district should pay you to present. It's been my privilege to see you twice present to students of mine and once to us teachers at a pro d. You helped me lock down my profile. Keep doing what you are doing and let the pretenders carry on copying! They will never equal.

Hi Darren:

Your team is the best! You have a unique way to reach the students but then you are sure to present similar info to parents. It has created valuable discussion at our dinner table. My children educated me more from your talks than any other presenter they have had on this invaluable content. Thank you!

Hi Darren:

My kids learned SO MUCH from your presentations in Washington. My brother is a high school teacher and also raved about how his students were impacted by hearing you. And lastly, when my daughter had a concern about whether she was being targeted and I wrote to you, I got a detailed and caring answer in a very short period of time. A++++ organization.

Hi

The white hatter presented at my school and it was by far the most diverse presentation I have attended. We were taught about dangers behind social medias in a different way, but more importantly we were shown how to protect ourselves online. During the presentation we took out our phones and we were shown the proper privacy settings we should be using. This team ensures to focus on their age group- my school was even split into age groups to ensure everyone gets the most out of the presentation. The white hatter makes a personal connection with everyone in the audience and is well worth the money!!

Hi White Hatter

Best presentation in 18 years of teaching, twice! Every student and parent should be required to attend.

Hi Darren,

I have seen your presentation on cyber safety a whopping four times and its message has ingrained itself into my brain with super glue. I cover my webcam with tape, avoid Omegle like the plague, and have sniffed out and thwarted many a catfish from my unsuspecting friends’ contacts. Your message has stayed with me and has prevented me and my friends from making mistakes online that we could regret forever. The impact of your presentation has given me hope that it is possible to make people stop and think in a world that is fuelled by impulse. You found a way to get your message to stick in the brains of stubborn teenagers, and as a result, you have saved lives and helped many of us stay safe and aware.

To all:

Today, I contacted the White Hatter as a concerned parent. I had received a message from a stranger that contained an account and explicit content using my daughter's name, cell phone number and her face. They account in question did not belong to my daughter - it was a fake. There was another account as well, also explicit, using my daughter's full name, city, age and image. I first contacted police, and, when I was unable to get many answers, I turned to the White Hatter. Darren replied to me within minutes of my message. He called me (long distance to Alberta), and asked me the important questions. He was so knowledgeable and professional and matter of fact that I was put immediately at ease, knowing I was in the caring hands of a professional. Within the next few hours, we had several phone conversations in which he advised me of my options, of questions I might ask my daughter, and with advice about helping the police understand the situation. He did all of this without any compensation whatsoever. He did not ask for anything, nor imply that his services should be paid for (they should be). Darren acted as our proxy and contacted the online forums concerned to have the accounts removed. He quoted their own guidelines to them in order to get the intended results as soon as possible. As an involved parent, I highly recommend this team for all your child protection needs. They also give seminars in schools. Darren, thank you so much again. I felt totally comfortable in your hands.

Hi Darren and Beth:

We thought the presentation was great! Very heartfelt and honest, used a lot of facts so it wasn’t just a scare tactic, held our attention for 2 hours (impressive!), and was very helpful. Thank you for making yourself so approachable and treating us like young adults, not many teachers or adults are willing to see us that way and it was refreshing.

Hi Darren,

I am writing to you today because of the impact you have had on my life. You came to Princess Margaret Secondary School in Penticton, BC, about 3 years ago, and I watched your presentation on the effects of cyber bullying and numerous other things. At the time, I struggled with severe depression due to a number of factors, one being the way my peers treated me. I am now living in Ontario and taking my ATS testing to become a Police Constable. Your presentation inspired me to become an upstanding citizen and never back down to people who hurt others. It also helped me develop a sense of integrity within myself, which landed me a soccer scholarship and a new-found sense of confidence. If I remember correctly, you were once a police officer in the ranks - something I admire a lot. I am hoping to follow in your footsteps and be a light in the lives of people around me as a constable in Ontario. If I passed my Stage II testing, I will be applying to the Greater Sudbury Police Service, Waterloo Regional Police Service, Guelph Police Service, and the Ontario Provincial Police. Would you happen to have any advice for me as I move forward and embark on this journey to becoming a police constable? My greatest intention is to serve the community I live in and make people find themselves, just like you helped me to do via your presentation. Thank you for the light you radiate daily - you are an inspiration and I can gladly say it was an honour to watch your presentation those short years ago.

With admiration and sincerity,

Hey Darren

I know this is a little late but I just got Facebook so like in January I think u talked at XXX XXX middle school in XXX XXX and that is my school. Your talk about bullying even tho it made my cry a lot it made me realize that it will get better and that I'm not alone. I have gone through severe bullying to the point were it got physical... It got so bad I even cut my wrist once...I thought that I was all alone in the world because it felt like it was never going to get better but it did... After you talked to our school like 4-5 months ago things have gotten sooo much better!!!! I have not hurt myself for the last 7 months and I don't plan on ever doing it again and yeah the people still suck but I lerant to stand up for myself and to not be so afraid of everything and because of you I know that it doesn't matter how hard it gets that it WILL get better...but I'm messaging you because I just wanted to say thank you so so so so much Darren!!!! You really have literately saved my life and I will never be able to thank you enough for what you've done for me!!!! Thank you so much

Hi Darren and Beth,

I was at the presentation you gave last night and I just want to say kudos to you all for the information you have offered!  Though I feel like I am pretty savvy in technology, I always want to stay on top of this kind of information for myself and my daughter who is in 5th grade.  I am so glad I came tonight!

I worked for Microsoft for 12 years directly and 2 years as a vendor and though I was not a technical resource for them I learned their licensing and would eventually move into their compliance arm – basically IP infringement.  I can tell you that is a global revenue stream that all software publishers are jumping on.  Microsoft stays in the corporate sector for audits but their software is changing to address any piracy they can thwart on the personal computer channel as well.  I can easily see gaming and music companies going directly for end users – it is like a shoplifter – prosecute all.

Anyways, fantastic information!  You raised a great point about the use of the “virgin credit” I am looking into my E-Verify – to lock my daughter’s social security number until she is old enough to actually use it.  https://www.uscis.gov/mye-verify/about-mye-verify.

I have been spoiled working for a big company by listening to really compelling, polished, great presenters and you are right up there with the best of them.  Excellent presentation, I can see why the kids will listen to you.  The humor and impact of your stories will stay with them, and then we as parents will remind them, and remind them, and remind them…  Thank you so much for the great work you do!  Good to know you make a difference!!!

Have a great day!

Hi Darren

Thanks so much for sharing your message Darren, by far that was the most educational presentation we have had at OSS. And I think I can easily say on behalf of OSS that what you did for us today impacted us all, and we all learnt lots, so I just wanted to say thank you!! And keep it up because a lot of kids think this can never happen to them till it does. So I thank you, you really did get your point across, and in a great way!

Hi Darren,

I would just like to say that your presentation at Dr. Knox Middle School in Kelowna the other day for the students was the best presentation I have ever seen in schools. I have worked for the School District for 25 years and have seen many! As a victim of bullying all my life growing up, it really hit home. What so many people (adults) do not understand is that when I was a child/teen, bullying usually stopped at the school or mall or park, when you went or got home. That was usually your "safe place." Today, there is no safe place! There is no getting away from it. It is 24/7. My daughter unfortunately lost a very close friend about a year and a half ago to suicide. He was a hockey player with a huge career ahead of him. He played for several WHL, BCJHL teams. He was bullied and pressured in many ways by his own teammates. This is rampant within the junior hockey environment! Especially with the senior players toward junior players. Ultimately, they believe that multiple concussions were the root cause of the suicide but I have to wonder if the bullying and pressures were a contributing factor. 18 is way to young to lose someone! Please, please, please keep up the fantastic work and save many more lives in the process. The world needs many more wonderful people like you and your wife, maybe if there were it would be a much better place to live! Thanks you so much for everything you do and for whet you will do in the future! All the very best to you and yours.

A new friend, Randy

Hi Darren:

First, THANK YOU for presenting at Lynden Middle School yesterday. I have pushed Patrick to get you to LMS for 2 years now so I am very happy it worked out. My son who is in the 8th grade sat in the second row yesterday during your presentation. You moved him. You made him feel like he was not on an island. You made him see that he did nothing wrong. Two and a half years ago my son was groomed on KIK by someone. Thankfully I caught it but a lot of damage had been done already. You had no idea yesterday that when you pointed to the little Guatemalan boy in the second row and said something that you would be breaking down a wall that has been there for years. I cannot thank you enough. My husband and I heard you speak at Squalicum high school a couple years ago and again last night. We will never tire of hearing your presentation because it is ever changing. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart for helping my son and in turn for helping our family. You are truly a hero. Be well.

Today sparked some amazing conversations with students, and for that I truly thank you. It's inspiring to see someone who has the talent to capture an audience and be able to share such a wealth of knowledge about the real word. Hi Darren:

My friends and I where pleasantly surprised with your presentation. We thought (before the presentation) that it would be another one of those internet shaming/hating presentations we had before. It definitely wasn't one of those. It was informative and relatable to us, and you gave us insight on stuff we heard before, but didn't pay attention to b/c we were just told that the internet was bad (which it can be if you aren't safe on it). We also enjoyed how you compared previous presentations on the topic to abstinence only sex-ed and how it doesn't work You gave us the tools to be safe without telling us to just stay away from the internet. Great presentation and I hope you come back next year for the next generation of Dover Bay !!!

Hello Darren

I need to write and thank you for the lecture you gave at the Anacortes High School. My daughter came home and said "Mom, you need to go to see this guy tonight”. She has never ever requested that I go to anything school sanctioned.

I wasn't planning on going, because I thought I knew a good amount about what is going on out there in cyber space. Well, I found out I knew nothing.

You opened up my eyes and ears. You gave my daughter a wake up call about why she needs to be careful of her every move on line. Yes, this subject has been brought up in our house many times, but you got to the meat of it all, no wishy washy, no beat around the bush. You put it straight and that is just how these kids today need it, including mine.

You also gave me a gateway to talk about it in depth with my daughter which I wouldn't have had otherwise.

Thank you Darren. You really are saving kids from all kinds of evil that lurks out there. Please don't stop doing what you are doing.

Hi Darren:

I really believe that your Social Media Safety presentation made a huge impact in our lives. I don't think I have ever heard such an interesting and powerful presentation. Hi Darren:

Hello! My name is Katrina and I attended your presentation this afternoon. I just wanted to say I really enjoyed it! To be honest before the presentation I thought it was going to be another lecture on how "the internet was bad" and "how we're all doing horrible things" coming from someone who was old fashioned or uneducated about the whole matter. But i was very pleased to find that not only did you understand and know what you where talking about but you spoke with such truth and passion that anyone could be interested and quite enjoy it! I loved the presentation and thank you again for speaking to us today! Im sorry if this seems long winded or odd. I just think you're an amazing person and the world could use so so many more awesome people like you.

I'm a teacher at NSMS, I've experienced your presentation 3 times and every time I learn something new. My class wasn't sure how they were going to sit through 2 hours today, but they were so engaged and came to the classroom during their lunch to continue to chat about all the things they learned. I appreciate the shock value, language and content you use with the kids.

Thank you for continuing to educate and inform on the importance of Internet and online safety.

Wow in the 14 years my kids have been involved in school, I have never heard so much positive feedback over a presentation!! Thank you sooo much. I appreciated it more than you will ever know. Hi Darren:

Hi…... thanks so so much for coming to my school LTSS today. I honestly learned so much that I didn't know before and by far this was the most important, useful, and entertaining presentation I've ever had in school. You made me have a new outlook on not only how I treat others, but also seeing how others treat others as well online. What I mean is stepping up and defending my peers when I see something going on. Just a couple minutes ago I was doing that same thing on ask.fm.

Hi Darren

Thank you! And my friends and I loved how it was easy to connect to the presentation because you understand how teens react and act online. Just knowing how much the internet impacts our futures and the online profiles of ourselves really made us want to stay as safe and private online as we can be. Thank you for helping us and showing us how to protect ourselves online. You have a really amazing presentation and it's wonderful what you are doing for all of us. Thank you for coming to our school and thank you for an amazing presentation!

My son, Ryan, is a grade 8 student at LTSS - he came home today "thru the moon" about your presentations today - he told me "mom you HAVE to go tonight - i cannot believe the stuff I learned - Darren is AMAZING! Well, I had already planned to attend but now there was NO way to cancel!! Well I can tell you both that I was not disappointed in the least - in fact, that was by far THE BEST presentation on social media I have ever attended. I have spent the last 2 yrs attending as many of the school presentations as possible and this one was by far, Hands Down, THE BEST ONE YET!! You are not only so knowledgeable Darren, you are so relatible and every one of my 8th graders said they got some really useful tips from you and were so impressed that you are not anti-internet like their parents but instead pro-safety on the Internet. As a Kopachuck parent and staff member, I cannot thank you enough for what you are doing for kids across the globe. I hope you will be back to speak to our 3 high schools. Hi Darren:

I was at your presentation to the King's parents tonight, and am so thankful I took time to attend. I loved that you shared information, trends, context, solutions, and created an opportunity to engage in dialog with our children. This format, educating both students and parents, is brilliant. When I got home tonight I was able to talk with the kids about how do we, as a team, engage in safe behaviors and communicate about what we are experiencing on social media, with our peers, and on-line. In fact, when I suggested that we should talk about parking our devices in the evening, they were on board and I think this is largely due to your time with them this morning. I hope you come back again, and again, and again. Thank you!

Hi Darren:

Hey Darren I saw your presentation today at chss and was hoping you could check the privacy on my account/help me to turn on those privacy features. Btw I really loved that presentation it was better than anything I've ever seen. No one has been that open about Soical Media safety, cyberbullying and suicide caused by it so I really appreciate that. I almost didn't come to school today but my boyfriend saw you present at pgss and told me I needed to see it, so I came today. And I'm glad I did. Hi Darren

Thank you! I know a lot about internet safety from my mom (she sets up and manages social media, blogs, websites etc for other people) but learning about internet safety from a law enforcement point of view was very powerful. Some of my peers don't realize how permanent the internet is and I am sure they would like to make some changes to their profiles and habits. What you are doing is incredible, as you said, the internet isn't going away any time soon and we do need it, but we also need to be safe. Thank you so much for understanding and acknowledging that we do amazing things with the internet. The majority of adults, and teachers, seem to believe that we only wreak havoc and spread nudes. Again, thank you so much!

Hi Darren and Beth,

The presentation you put on last night at Willow’s was phenomenal.  I want to tell you how much I appreciate that you are out in the world doing what you do.

I hope that the words gets around that you are not only a source of valuable information, but an entertaining presenter. I have passed on your contact info and website and I hope that other parents will do the same.

When we left last night my husband and I were discussing the importance of this information.  It would be a wonderful thing to make this a mandatory program for all parents to attend.

There might not be a manual for parenting, but you have clearly created a culture for keeping children safe, and that is invaluable.

Thank you from the bottom of my internet naïve heart!

Hello Darren and Beth

We have had such wonderful feedback based on your December 9th presentation in Port Angeles.

I would also like to share with you a comment from the Principle at the middle school who stated that after your presentation, 12 youth came to his office 8 to report peer aggression/ bullying that has occurred, and 4 to report that they would like to set up a meeting to apologize to those they have been bullying.

Rave reviews all around. The Bullying Reduction And Violence Elimination group would love to bring your presentation back in the Spring to other schools in our county.

Hi Darren:

My 13yr old daughter came home and told me about the assembly. Thank you for helping me bring the importance of Internet safety home. I personally thought it was awesome that you had been messaging boys via FB who thought you were a girl. I have told my kids over and over, you don't know who is on the other end. I just love that those same words were shown to be true in real life, with people they see and know. Makes it more real I think. She touched on the grief that you shared with them. She said she had to hold back the tears at one point. Being that she is on the autism spectrum empathy and appropriate emotional responses are sometimes a challenge, so hearing that really touched me. It's nice when adults can support each other in safety when it comes to kids. My kids tell me to relax and roll their eyes at me when I launch into a repeat safely lecture. Better safe than sorry.

Mother 13yr old who heard our presentation

Hi Darren

I thought your presentation was a bold and necessary presentation. It was a breath of fresh air for someone to treat the children with the respect they deserve and talk about what is really happening. I too have known children who've cut themselves due to social media. And one who committed suicide. And for me personally, I was lucky enough to begin my journey in social media when I was already a teacher. So I had a rule from the beginning that if I wouldn't say it or share in my classroom, I wouldn't post it. It's funny. My weekend was just spent repairing damage done to a friendship because I logged on to her computer and thought I had logged out and she read my private messages with another friend and was desperately hurt. And we are all in our 50's. So the lessons go on . . . .

Hi Darren:

From the talk around the school after, your presentation was amazing. and to have some people in the audience who can relate or they know how it feels, and you giving the message that they aren't alone and that it will get better, is so reassuring for them. it was an amazing message and I think it opened a lot of people's eyes to what really goes on, on the internet. thanks again, I definitely think our school will be a better place after that presentation.

Thanks sooo much for the tips. We were expecting a boring lecture on 'how the internet is bad. Instead, I think everyone was engaged personally. We connected with you, on your level. Even the 'rowdy' students gave most of their attention. WE LOVED IT! Now, all the students are posting status' based on your presentation. AWESOME JOB! WELL DONE! What really gave me insight was the fact that pictures/posts/etc cannot be deleted. My dad worked in China for a long time, and he met some incredible computer 'geeks'. Hi Darren:

The presentation for parents was unbelievable, so informative, helpful, eye opening, but what I loved most is that you didn't just focus on the trouble that our children can get themselves into with social media you stressed that our kids are doing amazing and positive things as well! Not to mention, my daughter took so much away from the school assembly you presented at. Thank you to you and your wife!

Darren:

Honestly your presentation was amazing! I went into it thinking it was just going to be some person giving a lecture on social media safety and that was it. But it was so much better then that! Everyone was so focused and I feel like you didn't just stand up there and tell us what we heard a million times but actually spoke to us in a way that we would understand and could relate too!!!! All my friends loved it so much and found it very touching! It's people like you that will come to our school and actually show us that we don't have to be afraid and that yes it is an unsafe world but it is really realistic! And that if we need help we don't have to be scared or frighten to talk to someone!

Hi Darren:

Thank-you! We thought your Internet safety presentation was great, and very relateable, which was pleasantly surprising, as most presentations by adults on internet safety do seem as if they are coming from immigrants. Thanks again so much!

Dear Mr. Laur,

Thank you so much for bringing this much-needed presentation to our students at Parkland Middle School today. You are doing amazing work to help children and young adults to protect themselves on-line and to be aware of how their activities on the internet are all-too public. After your moving and inspiring presentation, the students in my class could not stop talking about what they had learned and experienced - I really think you are creating an important snowball effect of life-saving information that the students will not forget. Thank you again for your compassion, vision and drive.

Sincerely, Eve Subra

Hi Darren,

I just wanted to thank you for your presentation today at FHS. It was incredibly powerful. I was so impressed with three things. First, the presentation (ethos, pathos and logos, with emotional highs and lows - impressive). Second, you actually got the students to put away their cell phones (BRAVO!) and third, when you were serious, our students were silent and paying attention.

I taught alternative high school for 10 years prior to FHS. I was always trying to send the message about social responsibility, that we are the eyes and ears of our community. You did a great job of getting the students to hear that message. When we returned to our classroom, my 9th graders and I had a debrief. They heard you loud and clear. Thank you for dedicating your career to saving the lives of our young people. It really does take a village.

Hi Darren and Beth,

I attended the excellent presentation you did last week at David Thompson Senior Secondary in Invermere, and my son saw you that afternoon.  I want to thank you for the exceptional presentation and commend you for your outstanding contribution.  I also do speaking presentations and was quite disappointed in the audience reaction and appreciation after you finished, I had anticipated about a twenty minute standing ovation.  I want you to know that the whole town has been talking about it in the most positive and amazing way so you had a very large and positive impact even without the standing ovation!  And, as you are already aware, my son got a lot out of your information as well.

Humans are drawn to people who are passionate about what they are doing and we are very lucky to have received your message; timely, well delivered, from the heart and with extraordinary passion.  I will be passing on your info to families in other cities in the hopes that they will bring you to educate their school also.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Sincerely,

Hey Darren.

I'm from Selkirk secondary school. I just want to say that your presentation was unbelievable! It really was.... It was very inspirational. And it was VERY GOOD... I just want to thank you for the message you gave all of us. Keep spreading your knowledge about this issue... Thanks agian.

Hi Darren:

Thank you so so so much for coming, you are an absolutely amazing speaker. Your presentation has definitely changed the way I think about internet safety and cyber harassment. I know it has had the same effect on others in my school. Keep doing what you do !!!!

Good Day,

My son came home from Woodlands high school yesterday, he’s in grade nine, he was very excited to tell us about a guy (the White Hatter) who came to talk at the school, he told us he was pretty cool and if we didn’t have plans that night that we should go and listen to him talk at the school.  Our son is a quiet, amazing boy, for him to come home and share little bits all night about this talk and what is happening, that we can contact the guy and talk about this with such excitement and importance was really great,  that the computer is a good tool if we use it positively.  The stories went on like this into the evening.

I would like to thank you for coming to speak to our youth, for being real and honest so that our youth want to listen and see the passion that was being shared in the stories told.

I can’t help but wonder when all the kids are so pumped about this, if we could have some program to keep them interested, apparently a lot of kids were talking about it after school and on the ferry home to Gabriola;))

thanks again and enJoy the day

Hi Darren,

Thank you so much for your work and commitment. This is so important for citizens of the 21st century, citizens of social networking. It is heartwarming to know that someone in the world cares about youth and their safety and actually speaks out and encourages and educates us.

I myself now feel refreshed and well educated on the topics you covered even though I thought I had heard these warnings too many times and didn't need to learn anymore. I aim to be more responsible and careful in my actions, not just in my social media profiles but in how I act and treat others in person.

Your powerful presentation knocked the breath out of me and I heard someone else describe it to have "punched them right in the heart". You're saving thousands of people who are struggling today and those who are yet to come in the future. Thank you, thank you, thank you to you and your team and to the "popos". You guys are amazing. Keep doing what you're doing because you're changing the world for the better.

Hi Darren:

I was so absolutely moved by the presentation yesterday, it was awesome, honestly, I loved it, you connected well, you got emotional with everyone else, most guys who come in to do this sort of thing stay stone faced and you didn't, it made it just so much more real, i'm sure several people who were in the gym are changing their ways, and many are probably feeling safer on-line now! I have always worried about some of my friends, but I didn't know that I would be able to call upon help from people like you, it made ME realize that there are people who can do stuff I never could to help, and so I am so glad you came in! I honestly cried, and I NEVER cry, you are changing lives for the better because of your presentation. THANK YOU !!!!!

Hi Darren

Your presentation was AWESOME!!! it heard things that we actually hadn't been taught before, and when you said you had been creeping some student's accounts, that was great and you could just see peoples faces go uh oh. it was funny and serious all at the same time, and in particular when you started talking about the self harm is what really got me, I always think kids are so un-aware of it, even though I think its 1 in 6 kids now do it. All in all, we all LOVED your presentation!!!!

Hi Darren

I have seen other Internet safety presentations from other presenters here at our school, but yours ROCKED !!!!!  Unlike the other presenters, you treated us like teens and young adults which we all appreciated.  You also get it and don't pull any punches, you spoke the truth and that is also something that we appreciated. Thank you so much for coming to our school !!!!

Hi Darren and Beth:

I wanted to thank you very much for your amazing parent presentation last night. I am one of the Myrtle Philip parents and my daughter was the one who made me go, and you have no idea how happy I am that I did. You made a huge impact on both my daughter and myself. I have never seen her so excited and moved by anything, your Internet and Social Media Safety program for schools had a huge impact. She said she felt empowered and so educated about the reality of what is going on. THANK YOU!!!!! I do hope my daughter sends you a message in asking for helping in securing her privacy on her facebook page. btw, no technology in the bedroom started last night, and without any arguments. Wishing you the best and am so grateful for all the work you do and lives you save!!!!!!!!

Hi Darren

you and your wife came to Prince George a few months ago. I just wanted to say thanks. Two weeks ago I was being cyber bullied very badly over at a website called ask.fm.. The person was saying things like calling me a fat ugly xxxx and that I should go kill myself. I have to say what this person said to me over this website was extremely hurtful. The bizarre thing is I didn't have an ask.fm account they were saying shit about me on my friends! While I was going through that for a month and a half I would say right after it hit a month and a half I was done! Like its one thing to call me a xxxx but to tell me that I should go and kill myself is way to far. So I was thinking and I said well remember what that "white hatter" guy said. He said "tell someone right away. Don't let it get to far." So I did. I told my principles and we had the police get involved and everything. The thing that made me the most upset is that the person that was doing this to me was one of my best friends. But what I really want to say is THANK YOU!!!! Without that presentation you gave us idk what I would of done. Thanks

Hi Darren:

Thank you so much!  The other teachers and I have been talking about how excellent you were. My students came to class after buzzing about how they had so much work to do locking things down tonight. You really made an impact. I myself can't stop thinking about it! I thought that I was pretty careful, but thanks to you I have so much more to think about now. Scary stuff. Really appreciate what you do. I have heard other outside presentations on Internet safety that were much shorter ones and consisted mostly of showing videos. They were also good, but not anywhere near as informative and impactful as yours. I have already recommended you to a teacher friend of mine for her school. I wish you could go everywhere and talk to everyone!! Thanks again for everything! PS: Today the kids were still talking about how good you were... and the consensus among teachers was that it was the best and most relevant presentation we've seen  Keep spreading your message, the kids and us teachers need it! Take care

Hi Darren:

Truthfully i havent spoke to my friends about it just yet but i know everything about your presentation will be BOMBING through out the school tomorrow. If im speaking about what i liked about the presentation, was that it was very real. Nothing was being hidden and you gave a presentation that no one has ever done. New info, a different look at suicide coming from the real expert. I liked that you showed videos and images and kept the student body interacted and alive. NORMALLY we would be slumped half way in our seats half asleep and probably drool slipping off the corner of our mouths (LOOOOL). But today , that was completely not the case. I loved that you used language in a way us students like but kept it professional, most of the times many presenters will come in with very formal boring language, its really all about the image and the way you give away your information. The way you did it with keeping everyone awake was perfect, you didnt just read 500 pages of blank information like most people would do. You put your own character and life experiences in it. Showed us the real deal, what people are actually going through and what many people in my school have gone through, bullying, cyberbullying, being attacked emotionally and by others.

Hi Darren:

I'm not really good at putting things into words, and I don't know if I'll be able to express to you how much your presentation really resonated with me. It was absolutely eye opening. Usually when a speaker comes to our school, we sit and we listen and we clap, but that's it. We respect them, and we think about what they say for a while, but most of the time it doesn't really stick with us. But you get it. Absolutely, you get, and you make us want to listen and do something about all the shit that is going down.  Your Internet safety presentation was amazing !!!!

Hi Darren:

Hello, I watched your presentation at Nanaimo District Secondary School today, and i don't even know what to say, it was probably the best presentation on internet safety that ive ever seen ! . It really made me open my eyes about whats going on online. it's incredible how much stuff can happen if you just click one suspicious link, or add a questionable picture. Thanks for doing this, ive definitely become more aware about the internet and social networks, and i'll definitely report to you if i see any cyber bullying or harassment going on. Thank you again !

Hi Darren:

I'm XXXX XXXXX, a Senior at XXXX High School. I sat front row at your presentation on Wednesday, and all i've got to say is THANK YOU. Our high school might seem well put together, full of mature kids. Some of that is true, but i know a lot of GIRLS who are just MEAN people.

I'm our schools FFA president, i play volleyball, I'm in my class's ASB, and i've been nominated for homecoming every year, this year i finally won queen! I know what you're probably thinking, most people would think "Ms. Popular" and think I have a TON of friends, and am ALWAYS doing stuff on the weekends. Completely WRONG. To be honest i only have a few close friends that i like to hang out with. I lost a lot of friends this year, and i'll tell you why.

A lot of my senior guy friends started hanging around with the sophomore girls. Which is completely understandable. They're cute, fun, and outgoing girls! But a lot of my senior friends (Girls) weren't going to have it. They started sending out mean texts, posting pictures on facebook and instagram making fun of them. It got so bad that the sophomore girls came to me because they didn't know what to do. I talked to my senior friends, and stuck up for the sophomores. Well a majority of my senior friends don't talk to me anymore because of it. Pretty soon those hateful messages were stopped being sent to those sophomore girls, and they started getting directed toward me. But honestly, i'd rather have them hate on me, I can take it, I have strong roots and broad shoulders.

BUT anyways! Thanks to YOUR message and YOUR presentation a lot of my friends have apologized to both me AND the sophomore girls, which i am SO thankful for. So all i want to say is THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for making the mean things stop.

Sincerely.

Hi Darren and Beth:

I noticed that a lot of my buddies tweeted how it was also the best Internet safety presentation they've seen. I also want to say it has made me look at cyber bullying differently, I used to think it was not that big of a deal and I took part in it. But now after today you made me think of what those people feel. I thank you soo much for coming today and I hope you get this out to every student across BC

Hi Darren:

Seriously the best Internet and Social Media Safety presentation I have seen in my 13 year teaching career. Hit home for myself and my students. Thank you! Please check my security settings. And thank you from a teacher from Princess Margaret Secondary. Everybody was raving about it. Spoke to 2 parents after and their kids had already told them about it as well. So much to think about and now to talk to my own young kids about as they start to surf the net on their own. Thank you for the links and thank you for what you do. You are changing lives.

Hi Darren:

We all thought that it was amazing. We have seen tons and tons of presentation on Internet safety and bullying but all of them were boring, some kids would actually sneak out because of it or not even listen and drift off to space. But yours was really inspiring you were able to get everybody's attention and was able to get us all interested in what you were saying, I like the way you started your presentation with that fake Facebook account you had and how you creeped us on Facebook and how you were telling us how easy it was to do all of this stuff to us and our lives, it really got us thinking twice. All of my friends told me that they have changed their privacy settings and everything on their phones, iPods, lap tops etc... Thank you for coming out today we all really appreciate it.

Hi Darren:

I don't think I've ever heard that much positive feedback on a presentation. It was all anybody really talked about for the rest of the day. Even my math teacher who was far from Internet savvy took stuff from it (including the word "troll" that he doesn't understand in the slightest) thank you for that advice, I had a blog back two years ago I used to post all my thoughts on. And while I didn't write anything bad its just best to be forgotten. I love what you're doing, it's like you're some kind of Internet safety super-hero. I definitely took a lot from your presentation, I hope we can hear from you again sometime!

Hi Darren

My wife, 13-year-old daughter and I attended your evening presentation at Burlington-Edison High School on Jan. 29 (we aren’t even a part of the Burlington school district) and I was amazed at how engaged my daughter was during your speech. I work in Information Technology and previously worked in Information System Security, but when I try to explain the dangers of the cyber world to my daughter, I get the glazed over eyes and the “yes dad” response. I am like you in the sense that I love social networking (and technology) and how it can be a great tool when used appropriately.

Although our daughter doesn’t have a data plan on her smartphone, we allow her access to Wi-Fi. I have it locked down with parental controls (only email is allowed, all other access is locked) and we do not allow her to have the phone in her room at night. It is still a struggle every night to get her phone, but surprisingly after your presentation she brought it to us without us even asking last night. We also have not allowed her to set up a Facebook account yet, but were planning on doing it after her report card this coming semester. After listening to your presentation and seeing how well our daughter listened to you, we are more comfortable with the idea now. It is encouraging to see how receptive our daughter was to the things you presented. THANK YOU!!!

I have already promoted you to friends at work who are pretty active in their kids’ schools. You are an outstanding speaker and I appreciate the work you and your family are doing. You mentioned that you do a different presentation for the kids. My wife and I would love to attend one those presentations.

Thank you,

~Mike (Parent)

A good friend of ours who is a high school teacher called us up last week and said, "This guycame and gave a two-hour presentation to the kids at the school today about internet safety and online protection and he was amazing. He had their attention for the whole time, you could hear a pin drop, and the students were just hanging on his every word. He's doing a presentation for the parents tonight and you NEED to go see him. He's phenomenal."

My husband had plans that night with our daughter so he couldn't go. And I didn't want to go. I'd had a busy workweek and just wanted to put the kids to bed, have a glass of wine and let the Netflix wash over me. But he was insistent. "It sounds really good. I called my mom and she can babysit the kids. You're going."

So, I hopped in the car, drove to the local community theatre and took a seat. The people began to trickle in and then Darren Laur took to the stage.

He introduced himself, told us about how he has been with the Victoria City Police for 27 years and has a passion for keeping kids safe online. I can't even begin to touch on all the information he gave us, but he did it in such a way that after listening to him for two and-half hours, it felt like he'd only been talking for 20 minutes.

Please take a few minutes and check him out here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=QoPe-skp4Nc

The word about Darren Laur needs to spread. Check out his website, and then tell your school that they need to have him come and do a presentation for your students. Our kids are facing an online landscape unlike any other and Darren speaks to them in their language about how to be responsible digital citizens (aka: if you send a photo of your boobs to your boyfriend-of-the-week, chances are that when you break up three days later, he's going to forward that image of your ta-tas to the whole school) and give them the know-how to use the internet wisely. He actually has a Facebook page of a supposed 16 year-old girl and in the days before he presented to the high school students, he was creeping their Facebook pages and had managed to get close to 100 of them accept his Friend Request, had texted with them, and even set up a date with one of the kids. How's that for eye-opening?! He sure snagged their attention with that and made them realize just how easy it can be for people to be something they're not online.

I was shocked to hear that the hours of highest social media usage in teens is between 10:00 pm and 3 o'clock am. They are taking their phones to bed with them and texting, tweeting, surfing the night away, then wake up feeling like junk the next morning because they haven't had any sleep. Crazy. Darren is a huge proponent of the internet and acknowledges just how cool it is and how it allows us and our kids to connect, share creativity, and explore. He doesn't have an Anti-Internet message, rather a deep understanding of how we and our kids need to develop a responsible attitude towards our online behavior.

Darren has a gift and it needs to be shared. I am going to make sure I do all I can do to get him to come back to our town once our kids are older. You need to see him. Your kids need to see him. It will open up dialogue about this hugely important subject.

I am not being compensated in any way for this post. I was just so moved by what he had to say and his knowledge and passion are phenomenal.

Look him up, talk to your principals and do all you can to help get him into the schools in your city. You won't regret it.

Amanda (Parent)

Hi Darren

We really loved it! To be completely honest I was dreading it at first, 2 hours of sitting listening to some guy talk about stuff I probably already knew. But hearing you speak you really demanded the attention of the student body, and that is not an easy task for such a long period of time. Your passion is admirable and i hope too some day love my job as much as you do. Also the information was intriguing and relatable not something I was expecting. Really well done! Ill be thinking of your presentation when ever on social networks.

Thanks so much!

Hi Darren:

Thank you so much and I was talking to some friends after your presentation, and it seemed everyone loved it! I have to admit, at the beginning i was thinking "oh man, another boring presentation...." considering most that we see are actually really boring! But right when you first started speaking to us, the whole school was laughing! We had lots of that actually, which encourages us teens to listen! Then there were parts where you realized the damage that can be caused by typing on a stupid keyboard!! I truly believe that everyone enjoyed your presentation, and i hope that you get a chance to visit other schools nearby! I think all teens should get the opportunity to learn not only the damage from cyberbullying, but also how to protect themselves from it, and other risks while being on the internet. Thank you again, it was great hearing you speak today!

HI Darren,

My name is Sabine, and I am Paula and Cassie's mom (you met them at George Bonner Middle School yesterday and Paula also contacted you about her Facebook security settings). I just wanted to take a moment to say THANK YOU! Both my girls came home yesterday spilling over with excitement, worry, sadness and a deep respect for you and the work you are doing. You made a big impact on both of them. I am very involved in my childrens online activities and monitor facebook on a daily basis. Although I constantly tell them many of the things that you told them yesterday, in their eyes I was just the overly worried mom who seems to "make a fuss about nothing". Your words and experiences will be remembered by both of them, and hopefully it will help them in making good choices when it comes to the online world.
I know Paula mentioned that you suggested that some of her settings need to be adjusted - so when she comes home from school today, I will sit down with both of them and see what we need to do.  It is a scary world out there in cyberworld - so again - thank you from the bottom of my heart - your effort and work is greatly appreciated in our family.

Sincerely,

Sabine (A Mother)

Hi Darren, today you did the presentation at my school, Edward Milne. I just wanted to let you know that that presentation actually had a huge impact on me and i know ALOT of the other students who were there. Usually those presentations are boring and don't relate to us at all, but yours did, made us understand, and actually care about whats happening out there.

I'm currently a teacher at Mount Doug. I was at your presentation on Friday and I wanted to say how much I really appreciate what you do. The message you communicate saves lives and helps our kids to know that we're listening and will help. I also have a 13 year old brother and I had him in mind as you spoke, I'm encouraging him to clean up his Facebook profile and am doing so myself as we speak. When you have the time, would you mind checking my privacy settings and sending me the video you created to let me know how to make a facebook profile as safe as possible? Again, your presentation was engaging, informative and enlightening. You have my utmost respect and I wish you the best in all that you do. Thank you on behalf of myself, my family and all of my future student.

The information was great! I'm actually Minister of School Health at Mount Doug (for student council) so it was awesome knowing that 99% of the student population was getting such important info. I also know that some students are a bit naive (sometimes myself included) when it comes to the internet and it was fantastic to have someone who actually knew what they were talking about show students the dangers that can result. And thanks for the link!

Thank you! It was very different than anything I had heard about internet safety before, and I really liked it! I think most of the other kids were surprised by how much they enjoyed it too. A lot of my friends wanted to skip it, but afterwards they were very glad they stayed!

I would like to say I really appreciated your presentation! It was extremely informative. Thank you for the work you do with cyber bullying and helping teens who are being harassed. Your presentation truly opened my eyes and made me think twice about the things I will post. Everyone who was at the presentation really enjoyed it. All of the terminology and that one minecraft joke about creepers I feel really kept everyone engaged for the more serious parts. As well you clearly knew what you were talking about and when you said you had been creeping some of us on Facebook the thought that went though my mind was " well shit, maybe this guy has a point" and after that you only gained more of my interest into the topic.

We really enjoyed your presentation, it was unlike any of the other presentations we've seen before on Internet safety or bullying. You're presentation truly had such a big impact on my friends and I! Thank you!

As a Vice Principal of a middle school today, Darren’s presentation not only opened my eyes but it allowed me to feel like I am doing my part to educate and protect my students during these exciting but often scary times. To observe our entire student population glued for Darren for two full hours in the afternoon was one thing, but to have one quarter of our school connect with him outside of school on Facebook to have him confirm their privacy settings speaks volumes! In addition we have had a steady flow of parents through our doors and on email this morning espousing some of the “best dinner table conversation” they’ve had in years with their kids.

Darren and Beth, thanks for supporting us to keep our kids safe!

Nadine Naughton, Vice Principal of Gordon Head Middle School

Hi Darren,

I imagine you are very busy so I will keep this as brief as possible. I just wanted to tell you that you can probably consider me one of your success stories and that I definitely count you as one of the people who had positive influence in my life. Years ago, probably 15 or so I was going in a very wrong direction- you may remember me- I owe you a huge thank you- you may have helped save my life. I now am grown up with a career, a husband, a home and children of my own.

My daughter is 13 and I am terrified about parenting her through the next 5 years, she is a good kid, smart, kind and responsible however the social media terrifies me. I feel like this year (grade 8) her social life has exploded and in her eyes I know less and less about the world :( I often read your articles to her just so she can hear things from someone else and not me. This year I feel like I am losing control of my baby- although she is not into anything that makes me uncomfortable at this point I just worry about how to stay "with" her through these years, to guide her, to help her from making the mistakes that I made, to keep her safe.

The Amanda Todd story has me feeling terrified for our children and it has been on my mind all night. This morning when I read your words below I felt so much comfort and reassurance that I am doing what I can. Just keep doing what I do even when she doesn't want me to. Do you mind if I quote the words below on my facebook page?

"Parents; reach out to your kids even when they don't want you to, parents talk to your kids even when they don't want to talk to you, parents be parents even when your kids don't want you to, parents given your child a hug today even when your kids don't want you to, parents let your kids know you love them even though they may not want to hear you say so. Parents, if you sense something is wrong trust your instincts, dig a little deeper and if you can't help reach out to someone who can."

Thank you again for caring about me when I needed you to- even if I hated it at the time.

Your presentation was so sick. normally no one can sit through a half hour Pep rally without getting bored. You kept all of us insterested for a full two hours, and your humor mixed with some of the seriousness…… awesome !!!!!!

I thought your presentation really got the message across about cyber safety! at points you had us laughing and at others you had us almost crying. Other presentations we were given were the same thing everytime and super boring but you had my attention the whole entire time!!! thank you for taking the time to come to my school.

Hi Darren.

I wanted to say thank you for your presentation last week at my daughters school.  This is a conversation that I have been having with my girls for a couple of years, but having it validated by someone other than what they may see as an "over protective Mother" was fantastic! Cyber bullying and internet safety are frightening issues that were not at all a concern for my generation, so I see proactive presentations such as the one you have developed as being imperative for protecting our youth and giving them the tools they need to make informed decisions.

Well done!

Your Internet presentation was really touching.. i enjoyed it alot. and to be honest i didnt really want it to end…

We all loved the presentation, I have actually been going around to elementary schools and taking about cyber bullying with our counselors, but it was nothing like yours. Everyone I know who watched it has now changed there privacy and phone settings to be safe. Thank you so much !!!!

Your Internet presentation was soooooooo GOOD, I thought it was going to be one of those presentations where we were going to be told "stay off the Internet" or something like that, but you are really good at what you do and really got through to alot of people, plus I don't think I have ever cried at a presentation like that

Thank you!! my friends and I loved your presentation, we thought it was going to be another  boring Internet safety presentation, but it was awesome! And so funny!! Good job!

Thank you !!!!! your presentation was amazing! My friends and I all agreed you are an amazing speaker who really understands all the situations that could happen and tell us in a way that treated us like young "adults" and not sound like mom is nagging you. Everybody I talk to now is downloading Bullguard, changing their facebook, and watching their digital footprint. This presentation was needed in our school! Thanks again !!!!!!

At times you could have heard a pin drop. For two hours on Monday morning, senior students attended a special assembly on internet safety that was just as eye-opening for the adults in the room as it was for the kids. Presented by Personal Protection Systems Inc.—a company dedicated to teaching violence prevention, safety awareness and self protection strategies to men, women, children, businesses, corporations, government and schools—the talk provided information to help students stay safe when interacting in the cyber world.

Darren Laur, currently a Staff Sergeant with the Victoria City Police Department, and his wife, Beth started Personal Protection Systems in 1993. Darren is passionate about protecting the personal and emotional safety of youth on the internet. He is passionate about catching cyber bullies or, as he calls them, “cowards behind keyboards and smart phones.” And he is passionate about educating students to become good digital citizens.

His talk covered everything from how to protect your Facebook page to protecting yourself from “creepers” to how to preserve the integrity of your “digital dossier.” Timely information for students who, according to Darren, are “depending upon [the internet] more and more to conduct everyday life, which also includes the sharing of private and at times very sensitive information about ourselves with others online knowingly, and at times, unknowingly.”

A similar presentation was also made to Middle School students and Middle School parents earlier in March.

Your presentation was fantastic! Probably ranked one of the top ones out of the others we had. It was an excellent way to start off the YCI camp as well. I really loved how much emotion you put into your speeches and presentation. Many of us were very into your topics because we could really relate and learn from what you were saying. Personally, your presentation was one of the best for me.

Angela Yu

From a friend who teaches in Abbotsford, I received information that you are one of the best presenters he has ever heard.  I am curious about the potential of your internet safety assembly being booked for the fall 2012?

High School Principal

This morning I had the pleasure of viewing a presentation on "Internet Safety" by Darren of 'Personal Protection Systems'.  I have taught Information Technology for many years, from grades 4 to 9, and am deeply immersed in social media both on and off the job.  I was admittedly a little jaded going into Darren's presentation, having been told before by "experts" how to keep kids safe online.  What is different about Darren's approach is that he actually does know the culture of these kids.  Adults often make the mistake of thinking that this generation (mistakenly referred to as "digital natives") have a solid grasp of technology and how to maneuver  on the Internet.  Darren points out a number of fallacies in this line of thought, and in fact it is their fearlessness that creates dangerous situations. The audience this morning consisted of over 600 11 to 15 year olds.  They sat for almost 2 hours, riveted by what Darren had to say.  It is clear from the start of his presentation that he is sincere, invested and extremely knowledgeable. The message for me was especially validating, and will be one that I will continue to share with my students. If I had to sum up my thoughts about Darren's presentation, I would choose the words Frank, Authentic and Critically Important.

Darren:

I went into  our den at home the other day and there was a blank  yellow post it note sticking up from the upper edge of the lap top screen. I didn't think much of it  - I figured my wife had  left it there as a reminder for something. Then she asked me the other day if I had been finding any of these on the computer - I told her I had and figured she had left a reminder for herself. However I learned  the real reason they have been there  is that my 14 year old daughter got very "creeped out"  by one of your lectures last year and is now worried that some pervert will hack the computer while she is on it and obtain a photo of her  - so she puts the yellow sticky over the built in lens to prevent this (not sure if this was your advice or she figured that part out on her own).

I remember back at the time of your presentation that  you made quite an impression on her  - I  just didn't realize it was going to be a lasting impression. Thank You !!!!!!

Hi Darren and Beth!

Thank you so very much for the powerful and educational presentations on Internet and Social Media Safety to our kids and parents! It was outstanding and I am so grateful to have heard about your program. I think it's safe to say it was enlightening for all and quite possibly life changing for some. I look forward to hearing you speak again in the future.

It is obvious how passionate you are about what you do and it comes through loud and clear to those listening. All I can say is thank goodness there are "white hatters" like you looking out for our kids!

Thanks again!

Hi Darren and Beth,

Thank you so much for your two Internet presentations yesterday. The feedback I have received from students, staff and parents has been incredible. I will be sharing this information with our other principals. Please let me know if you need a ‘plug’ from a principal. I would be happy to speak about your presentation with any interested folks.

Thanks again Darren and Beth,

Man, I loved your presentation at ESQ High. Keep doin' what you're doin', 'cause you're protecting a lot of people. When I heard we were going to see a presentation on internet safety I said "I already know everything; I'm not stupid." But wow, I certaintly didn't know everything. I'm really glad you came to our school.  You were really funny and just plain awesome. And I also really like how you're so adamant on stopping cyber bullying and suicide. I'm the same way, honestly. But what really erks me is the people who commit suicide because of homophobia. ESQ's Gay/Straight Alliance and I have sent out numerous condolence letters to families because it really does affect us… Pardon my massive message, but really, you're doing awesome things and informing people on internet safety. Bravo to you and your wife!  Keep it up, white hatter!

Hi Darren! I just wanted to say that your Internet presentation today at Esquimalt High School was absolutely amazing! It was extremely powerful and really opened my eyes to alot of things. You found a way to keep me interested for a 2 hour presentation and not have it boring at all and not many people can do that.  I almost also started crying during the teen suicide part. It was very touching and made me want to do something to help the people who are affected by cyber bullying. I hope you continue on to open other students eyes about this because it opened mine for sure and I'm happy I learned more about the dangers and stuff. So thank you so much again

The Internet presentation today was wonderful. Thank you for coming. I really liked how you tailored it so well to your audience (your diction, your manner which you talked with us), I think that it got through to a lot of people. On a personal note, cyberbullying is an issue really close to heart and so I always appreciate when people bring up awareness, especially for this as it is the new age and thus a new method of communication (or bullying in this case). Thanks again, and keep doing what you're doing.

Quinn (High School Student)

Thank you so much for the Internet presentation at my school today. I really learned a lot about internet and text safety. I know people who have gone through cyber bullying and sext spreading and know i know how bad it is. i will be a lot more carefull what i post online now!
Thanx!!!

Today the whole grade 10 class was given a internet safety talk. This was probably the most interesting talk i have ever listened to. Like a lot of students when i first heard from the teachers it was a talk on cyber bullying i was like oh whatever we have listened to these since we were in grade 5... this was completely different. I don't think any person could walk away from it without a changed perspective. We all walked out of there in awe. All of my friends and I have combed through our friends making sure we knew all of them. Thank you for coming to our school today

Cailyn W. (High School Student)

I want to thank Darren and his team for coming to the school where I was subbing at.  I was blown away with how professional their presentation was but also how much the presentation impacted me and my students.  I believe it is necessary for ALL students to understand the impact the Internet has on our lives, but also the dangers that it can create.  Creating awareness is challenging for certain topics.  But Darren NAILED the presentation and really made you think about your actions with the Internet.  It is inevitable that all of our students will be impacted by their Internet use.  Darren's goal is to ensure that the interactions are safe and positive.  Thank you for making me think about my Internet use and teaching me ways to protect myself and helping my students do the same.

My students were certainly buzzing after your presentation and I heard from many students that this was the "the best assembly we've been to".  I was expecting nothing less, after seeing you two years agao at Glanford, and wasn't disappointed ! I was particularly impressed to see how you had updated your presentation to include current issues surrounding "sexting" and "Omegle".  In preparation for your presentation, we had done an anonymous survey in my class, that indicated that out of a class of 29 grade 7 students, at leat 4 were already experimenting with Omegle and a number said that they had gone to meet people that they had met online.  It made a profound impression on my students when you commented on both issues so powerfully. At Central, we have talked about hosting your presentation once every two years to ensure that every student that goes through the school gets the information at least once.  I have also talked up your presentation with staff from other schools.  While I know of some teachers and administrators that are doing an admirable job of intervening when conflicts involving cyber-bullying and sexting come up,  it seems to me that schools are not yet very well equipped to deal with the preventative side of online safety that your program covers so very well. Thanks again for offering such an important and powerful service to Central and I'll look forward to seeing your presentation again in the future !

My name is Andy Olsen and I am the chairman of the technology committee at Shawnigan Lake School and currently doing my Masters in Educational Technology.  I just wanted to lend my support for the Internet  presentation as it has been one of the most valuable things our students have been part of this year.  In my studies, it has become apparent that the education of our students in becoming better technology citizens has got to become a priority for schools.  While some of this can be done by staff members within your school community, it was even more powerful coming from a member of law enforcement who knows all of the intricacies of how students are conducting themselves online.  We felt the need to have Darren come not only for our students, but also for our staff and parent association.  We will be having them back again next September when our new students arrive.

Andy Olson

The presentation you gave at our school today was an amazing experience.  Not only did you educate the students, teachers, and administrators on Internet safety, but you were also very engaging.  To be able to hold the interest of 600+ students for a full TWO HOURS was admirable.  I believe you did so as your message is so relevant and important to our everyday lives.  When you announced how you had social engineered our student base you had our students hooked to your message.  Our students realized how exposed they have left themselves.  I'm convinced that your words and videos about cyber bullying will save many people undeserved pain.  I wish every school in our country would have the pleasure of your presentation.  The message is one all students, parents and educators should hear.  You moved my students and me Profoundly.

Chantelle Huynh (High School Teacher)

Hi, today you gave my school an Internet safety talk, and I would like to say that it was very great information.  I have been a victim of cyber bullying and every now and then it still happens to me.  I let my parents know, but now I know how to deal with it because of you.  Thanks for the talk that you gave to us.

Lauren M (Jr High School student)

I would just like to say thank you for coming to our highshool yeterday, your Internet presentation was absolutely fantastic! I have been keeping an eye on my friends Facebooks, and they are all saying that they loved your presentation, and that they had all changed thier privacy settings as you suggested.  What you shared with us was truly an eye opener, and I think that is exactly what our highschool needed.  I hope you continue to come back in the years to come, as it was truly a wonderful thing that you do !!!!!!

Megan N (Sr High School student)

Thank you so much for coming to NDSS today, it was a real eye opner, I never knew how much I was being watched while in Facebook.  I have always been careful with what I do on-line, but now I am even more aware.  The presentation that you do is so incredibly interesting and I am so glad you are bringing awareness to the highschools.  Thanks again.

Natasha K (Sr High School student)

Thank you so much for the Internet presentation at our school today.  No one could have gotten that point across better.  I think that it was a real eye opener to a lot of my fellow students.  Thanks again.

Matthew B (Jr High School Student)

Hi, you spoke at my school earlier this week and I just wanted to say thank you.  I haven't had any personal experiences with most of the things you talked about but it still touched me, and I needed you to know that.

Hello, just wanted to say thank you for your Internet safety presentation.  It has been quite the topic in our school and in our house since your presentation.  It is my hope that you continue with your message.  I sent our principal of our school a note saying how effective your presentation was.  Please follow-up with other schools.

We had a great supper-time conversation about your Internet presentation last night; it was really impactful.  Teenagers are a difficult demographic to engage with so the fact that your were able to get through speaks volumes about your skills and eperieince.  Thank you for the excellent work you and Beth do.

An appreciative parent

Hello Darren and Beth

Here is an email I received today from a parent.  This is just one example of the phenomenal feedbacks that we have been receiving from kids, staff and parents.  Thank you !!!!!

All The Best

Jill Bailey

School District 68

I had a wonderful conversation with my daughters yesterday who were simply "lit up" about the Facebook safety learning session at their school.  I wanted to pass on this feedback as it sounded like the school assembly accomplished its purpose; 1) they had a two hour learning experience that captured their attention for the entirety of the session, my daughter even said she kept looking at the clock and wishing it would slow down (fantastic!); 2) my girls actually came home and immediately made the changes to their Facebook accounts that Darren suggested. (I had been asking them for months to ensure they were using Facebook safely)

Darren was able to get the Safety message across in such a way that it was truly meaningful to the students and wasn't simply more adult rhetoric tha normally gets waived off.  I was thoroughly impressed by what I heard, and honestly believe this session has ensured better safety for the students who attended.  So from my husband and from me.....thank you! I hope you will be able to share this Darren who was the presenter.

Kind Regards

Sarah Kowalenko (Parent)

Hi Darren:

I am a reality based self defence instructor here in New Zealand.

I just wanted to say that your sebsite is brilliant and I applaud you for sharing your thoughts, opinions, experiences and research.  Having been a martial artist who crosses trained in BJJ and then went onto opening my mind and seeing the flaws of my own training, I am glad that we have likeminded people like yourslef to converse with.  Many of the names you have listed as having influenced your own work I too have studied their martial ideas.

Once again, thaks for allowing "free" access to the material you have posted on your site.  People's lives will be saved as a result I have no doubt.

Shaun Nicholson

Your Internet safety seminar for students was honestly the best presentation I've ever been to.  Thanks so much for coming to our school, and you made it really interesting too! I was engrossed in every bit of your presentation and just to let you know, I'll keep an eye out for cyberbullying because I agree it's not right.  It was terrible seeing those my age who had resorted to ending their lives and we can't let it come to that.  Thanks again, you were GREAT !!!!!

Julia T (Ladysmith Secondary School grade 11 student)

Hi Darren. Thank you again for sharing such useful information with all of the St Joseph School families.  Our Children practised their "temper tantrums" this morning (because we asked them).  I also overheard them roleplaying in free play yesterday a scene where someone asked for their parent's full name and they refused.  Obviously your workshop made an impact...........

Dr. Tamara E Goranson, R. Psych.

The Time spent in this course may have been the most valuable 3 hours of my life.  Thank you for arranging this for us.  Darren's expertise and style made this one of the most engaging presentations I've attended.  His keep real approach was so very refreshing.  He did not pretty up the ugly subject matter and I personally appreciated that.  The Be Aware theme could not have been made more clear, which shows its importance.  The things I learned to do if I ever find myself in a situation, will stick with me but I hope I never need to use them.

Jennifer McGarvie, Ministry Worker

On health and wellness day, two of the many guest speakers were Darren Laur and his wife, Beth Laur. Darren is a police officer for the Victoria Police, and also teaches classes on personal and internet safety. They travel around to various schools and work places teaching classes on how to avoid dangerous situations. The vision of Darren and Beth is to "promote awareness and safety and to excel in everything we do as a company." They have both written many books on personal safety such as: Enlighten Not Frighten, Total Awareness: A Woman’s Safety Book, and Internet Safety 101. These two people are making a huge difference around British Columbia among youths and adults. Darren talked about what to do if you ever get in a situation where you are being threatened, or someone is trying to get something from you. Some things that people do unconsciously that make them more vulnerable victims are: walking with your head down, losing eye contact with people who approach you, listening to music and reading or texting while walking. Strategies to ensure that you won't be a victim could be walking confidently with your head up, checking your surroundings constantly making brief eye contact with everyone, stop and lean against a building if you have to text, and listening to your music with only one headphone in. Many of the reasons that some people become victims of harsh crimes are because they are too embarrassed to do what they are suppose to. A tip that Darren gave us was that if you are wearing a long skirt, or long jacket and are being threatened then lift it up high and run, many people don’t do that because they are too embarrassed. Listening to this speaker helped many of us to consider our actions so that we don't become the future victims of street crimes.

“I attended the Wishart School “Safe Kids for Parents” seminar and I would like to say how much I appreciated the information that you taught us. I feel much more empowered and confident that I can teach my sons how to stay safe, which in turn will empower my boys to feel confident to handle themselves in a variety of situations: be it with an adult predator or with the day to day peer pressure I know they will encounter.”

Sincerely, Sarah Melanson

“I just wanted to say thank you very much for the wonderful presentation (Verbal and Physical Management of Aggressive and Violent Behaviour in the Workplace) last night. All the staff who attended were very happy with the content and the way in which it was presented. I believe it appealed to them because it was REAL!!!!! I cannot emphasize that enough. We have had many instructors come through the Hotel, but Darren brought both practicality and humour to a topic that we have not seen before. Thank you again, and we will be scheduling another presentation sooner rather than later! I will also recommend this to all my HR contacts in other Hotels.”

“I wanted to say thank you for the seminar (Safe Kids For Parents) that you held at Lakewood Elementary last evening. I was impressed and enlightened. Before I knew it 2 hours was up and it was time to go. What an amazingly talented speaker. Thank you, I learned alot. We’ll be back.”

“I had the privilege of attending the personal safety seminar at St. Anne’s last week, therefore I won’t need to register for an upcoming session.

That said, I would like to take this opportunity to provide a little feedback.

Darren Laur did not ask us to complete an evaluation form, however, in my judgement this was one of the most dynamic and engaging training sessions I have ever attended. As an award-winning public speaker with decades of experience before an audience, I was extremely impressed by Darren’s knowledge of his subject, passion for his message, and considerable talent for presentation - notwithstanding the highly sensitive and controversial nature of the material.

In short: I laughed, I cried, and most importantly, I learned. (Thank you Darren.)”

Tamara Malczewska

“I really enjoyed the seminar on Thursday night. The info was relevant and very informative. I was a little concerned going into the seminar that it was going to be dry and boring but not the case at all. Darren had my attention the entire 3 hours. I am glad that I decided to go at the last minute. Thanks to you Darren!”

Tracey Berends

“All of the Youth Center staff attended including both Programmers and Area Programmer which demonstrated a belief in the importance of the training, We all found the topics relevant, the responses realistic and the tools useful and pertinent beyond any other “security” training we have had. Darren was informative while being real, entertaining and anecdotal. His presence and delivery embodied everything he was telling us which made the time fly in a productive way.”

Gaileen Flaman

“Darren was awesome. He is a terrific speaker and presenter. The information he presented was very interesting and gave us good knowledge. Thank you very much for organizing this seminar.”

Diane Bowers

“I loved the session. Full of energy, humor, great stories and awesome/useful information.

Darren was not only informative, but very entertaining. Now, I just need to practice!

Thanks for setting this up for us.”

“I was really impressed with Darren’s talk on personal protection. It gave me lots of good information - things to look out for , etc. He made it very interesting with the examples he gave of everyday life and people and the problems they have encountered. I would recommend it to anyone!”

Debbie Gordon

“I thought it was an awesome seminar. He was very clear and easy to understand as well as entertaining. It’s just too bad some of our staff missed it.”

Lisa Hackwell

“I thought Darren did a great job in presenting. I enjoyed that he didn’t sugar coat anything and appreciate his frankness. I thought the material covered would be helpful for all community members, not just those who deal with the public. I’ll be talking to our summer hiring committee to see if his presentation would be suitable for our summer staff.

Thanks again for hosting and bringing Daren’s presentation to us. It’s a shame that more front line staff weren’t there especially Facility Attendants.”

Sadeep Kera

            Community Recreation Programmer

            Community Services

            Saanich Recreation Services

“Darren’s knowledge of combatives is refreshing and cuts like a laser beam through all the clutter that is now labeled Reality Based Training. He doesn’t sugar coat the ugly truth of violence in the real world. He is constantly learning new innovations and techniques. His training encompasses not only the physical aspects of self protection, but the psychological reasons for them as well. A true innovator in the field.” Ari Bolden-Jujitsu Instructor and Security Professional

“…the course provided value for the time and money I invested in it. I’m confident that the techniques that we learned would be very effective in protecting myself or my loved ones from physical attack…I highly recommend this training to anyone who is serious about being able to protect themselves from a street attack.”

Gary Koett

“The education and training you gave us was empowering and invaluable.”

Victoria Plaza Hotel Staff

“I just wanted to take a moment to acknowledge Cst. Darren Laur for his participation in the CHECK TV segments regarding safety on the streets and child safety. I think he did extremely well in getting a very important message across to tv viewers…I have no doubts that [his] frank discussions will make people aware of the safety issues discussed and perhaps make people think twice.”

Mayor Bob Cross (1996) Victoria BC

“My background is Wing Chun…I do recognize that your course is a superior one. You both are empowering to women through example. I would recommend you to anyone who is thinking about taking such a course.”

Cindy Polutnik

“I took part in the all day FIGHT BACK seminar. I found the workshop extremely useful and empowering…I also wanted to acknowledge the effectiveness of your husband and wife approach. As a woman, I felt encouraged by your resourcefulness and skill. [It] should be an essential requirement for anyone who works close contact with the public sector.”

“I took his tactical handcuffing and searching seminar when I received my Corrections Officer certification. I’ve been in the security field for 10 years and taken dozens of programs. However, Darren’s course was head and shoulders above them all. He REALLY does know of what he speaks.”

“The seminar that 10 of us women took through your company was absolutely awesome! All of the participants felt the day long course was invaluable. We cannot imagine why we had not done it sooner. As a mother, I could not have spent a more worthwhile day with my 18 year old daughter. I firmly believe that her awareness, confidence and level of understanding has risen to new heights.

“We want to compliment both of you on the professional manner in which you handled yourselves throughout the day. We were impressed by the passion you have for the subject of personal safety.”

Darren, the way you presented the material was clear and easy to understand for all age levels…The hands on practice was VERY realistic without causing undo worry for the participants. You both gave positive feedback to everyone in the group which boosted our confidence in handling ourselves.”

Cathy McKenzie

“The information Darren presented on keeping our kids safe was well received by our staff and we heard many positive comments regarding your presentation and excellent speaking style.”

“I think what you are both doing is so incredible and I think every woman (and even men) should take this program. Before I toook this program, I would have panicked and not had a clue how to get out of the situation. Now I know I would have the brians, and survival skills … to get me out of any situations.”
